What Do I Do If There's A Sprinkler Leak?

It's very important that you know what to do if your sprinkler system starts leaking. By law (code) all sprinkler systems must have a backflow preventer of some sort. There are a variety of these, but these prevent your irrigation water from back flowing into your city water or drinking water. It also is designed to shut off your water to your sprinkler lines incase of a leak.

After you located the box, it's not time to open it up and shut the water off. Below are a few examples of some backflow preventers that you may or may not have. Though they have multiple features, the main thing here is to notice how each one has multiple handles. In some cases, there may be dirt partially filled inside the box. If this is the case, then you need dig around it with a hand trowel or other tool that allows you to remove the dirt enough to locate the handles. These handles are how you can shut off the water to your sprinkler system. You only need to shut off one, but most people will shut off both just as an added precaution. We recommend shutting both off when winterizing your system.

Where Do I Find My Backflow Preventer?

Backflow preventers must be put in after the main water supply. This means that most people it will be near and/or after the water meter or water well. Try to look for a rectangular box with a green lid. Sometimes these get covered up with grass over time so it might be difficult to find at first. Another popular area they put these are on the side of the house or in the front flowerbeds. The pictures below show what these boxes look like from the inside and outside.
