What Is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding (also called hydraulic seeding) is a lawn establishment method where a blended mixture of grass seed, water, fertilizer, and wood-fiber mulch  called a slurry  is sprayed directly onto prepared soil using professional spray equipment.

That mulch layer does a lot of the heavy lifting. It locks moisture around the seed, speeds up germination, protects the soil from erosion, and gives the seedlings built-in nutrients right from day one. Most homeowners start seeing green growth within 7–14 days, with a full lawn establishing over 6–10 weeks.

It's one of the most cost-effective and reliable ways to grow a new lawn  especially for larger areas, slopes, or yards where hand-seeding would be difficult or uneven.

Our Hydroseeding Services

1

New Lawn Installation

Building a new home or starting fresh after construction? Hydroseeding is the ideal solution. We prepare the soil, select the right grass variety for your yard's sun exposure and soil conditions, and apply a professional-grade slurry that gives your new lawn the best possible start.

2

Lawn Repair & Bare Patch Coverage

Got large dead or bare areas that just won't fill in? Hydroseeding covers uneven ground and large areas evenly and efficiently  something hand-seeding rarely achieves at scale. We can restore patchy, worn-out lawns to full, uniform coverage.

3

Hydroseeding for Erosion Control

North Texas slopes and disturbed soil areas are especially prone to erosion during heavy rain. Hydroseeding is one of the most effective erosion control methods available  the mulch binds to the soil immediately after application, holding everything in place while the roots establish. If you have a slope, embankment, or freshly graded area, this is the smart solution.

4

Overseeding Thin Lawns

If your existing lawn is thin or patchy but not completely bare, hydroseeding can be applied over it to fill in the gaps and thicken up your turf. We'll assess your lawn first and recommend whether overseeding or a fresh start is the better option for your situation.

How Much Does Hydroseeding Cost?

Hydroseeding typically costs $0.06 to $0.20 per square foot, depending on yard size, terrain, grass type selected, and site preparation needed. For a typical residential lawn of around 5,000 sq ft, most homeowners invest between $300 and $1,000  significantly less than sod, which runs $1.00–$2.00+ per square foot installed.

The larger your area, the more cost-effective hydroseeding becomes compared to sod or hand-seeding.

Factors that affect your price:

  • Total square footage

  • Slope or difficult terrain

  • Soil condition and prep needed

  • Grass variety selected

The best way to get an accurate number is a free on-site estimate. We'll measure your yard, assess the conditions, and give you a clear, honest price before any work begins.

Why Hydroseeding Works So Well in Fort Worth

North Texas presents some unique lawn challenges  heat, clay soil, drought, and hard rains. Hydroseeding is a particularly good fit for this climate because:

  • Seeds develop deep, natural root systems from the start, making them more drought-tolerant than sod long-term

  • The wood-fiber mulch layer retains moisture during the critical germination window  especially important during Fort Worth's dry stretches

  • Fertilizer is built into the slurry, giving seedlings immediate nutrition without a separate application

  • It works on slopes and uneven terrain where sod installation is difficult or prone to shifting

  • You get more grass variety options than sod farms typically stock

Grass Types We Hydroseed in Fort Worth

Choosing the right grass variety for North Texas conditions is critical. Fort Worth's hot summers, clay-heavy soil, and periodic drought mean not every grass type performs equally well here. We help you pick the right one for your yard:

  • Bermuda Grass  The most popular choice for Fort Worth. Heat-tolerant, fast-growing, and thrives in full sun. Excellent for high-traffic yards.

  • Zoysia Grass  Dense, durable, and handles moderate foot traffic well. Great for yards that need a lush, carpet-like appearance.

  • Buffalo Grass  A native Texas grass. Drought-resistant, low-maintenance, and perfect for homeowners who want a lawn without heavy watering demands.

  • Tall Fescue  Best for shaded areas or yards with cooler microclimates. Stays green longer into fall than warm-season grasses.

Not sure which is right for your yard? We'll walk you through it during your free estimate  no pressure, no upsell.

Pair Hydroseeding with Irrigation for Best Results

A newly hydroseeded lawn needs consistent watering for the first 4–6 weeks  sometimes 2–3 times per day in hot weather. Miss that window and germination suffers.

That's where our irrigation expertise becomes a real advantage for you. Bob's has been installing and repairing sprinkler systems across Fort Worth for years. We can design an irrigation system that delivers the right amount of water at exactly the right time  taking the guesswork out of lawn establishment and protecting your hydroseeding investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hydroseeding worth it?

Yes  for most homeowners, especially those with large yards or slopes, hydroseeding delivers excellent results at a much lower cost than sod. The roots establish naturally and deeply, making the lawn more resilient long-term. The tradeoff is time: you'll wait 6–10 weeks for a full lawn versus 2–4 weeks with sod.

How long after hydroseeding can you walk on it?

You should stay off a newly hydroseeded lawn for at least 4 weeks, or until the grass reaches 3–4 inches in height. Heavy foot traffic too early can disrupt germination and create bare patches.

How often should I water after hydroseeding?

For the first 2 weeks, water lightly 2–3 times per day to keep the mulch layer consistently moist. After germination is visible, reduce to once daily. After 4–6 weeks, transition to a normal watering schedule. A properly set irrigation system handles all of this automatically.

Is hydroseeding safe for pets?

Once the hydroseeding slurry has dried  usually within a few hours of application  it is generally safe for pets. We recommend keeping dogs and cats off the area for the first 24–48 hours and avoiding foot traffic for 4 weeks to protect germination.

What is the best time of year to hydroseed in Fort Worth?

Spring (March–May) and early fall (September–October) are the best windows for most grass types in Fort Worth. Bermuda and warm-season grasses do well with spring applications when soil temperatures are rising. Tall Fescue performs better with fall applications. We'll advise on timing during your free estimate.
